Hallo,

is it possible to connect the Hercules Inpulse 200 and/or 300 with an Android phone? What App do I need to use on Android?

Many thanks for the information.

Regards
James

Hello,

I am not aware of any DJ app which is MIDI mappable (open to add a MIDI mapping of a DJ controller) so I do not think DJControl Inpulse 200/300 may work on an Android phone due to this.

Hello,

Connecting a DJ controller with built-in audio interface directly to the USB-C port of an Android smartphone or tablet will generally not work as most Android devices deliver a lower USB bus power than the 500 mA needed by many DJ controllers with audio.

To connect a USB device needing 500mA USB bus power, you should add power to the USB port, either with:
- a USB hub which has a power adapter, between the Android host and the USB device,
- or a USB adapter which has also a power input, and connect the power input while using the USB device, as for example
https://www.samsung.com/au/mobile-accessories/multiport-adapter-p3200- ee-p3200bjegww/

Another point to check is whether the Android host USB port is USB OTG (On-The-Go) = able to manage the Android machine as a host and the USB device as a device.
A simple test: if the Android host cannot recognize a standard USB keys as a data storage, the USB port is probably not OTG, and the solution is to connect a USB OTG adapter, like this
https://www.thomann.de/gb/thomann_usb_c_otg_adapter.htm
between the Android USB port and the USB adapter or USB hub.

Any update on this?

I've succeeded on using the "DJay" android app to route the audio out of the Samsung Tablet and into the Impulse 200, so it comes out of its RCA terminals and headphone jack. But none of the buttons, sliders, jogwheel do anything. You have to manually start playing a song using the tablet itself in order to hear it.

I'm not sure if my USB-C dongle meets the On-The-Go (OTG) criteria.

The functionality we want seems to be supported for DJay on iOs but not Android (Herules Impulse 200 is listed under the iOs supported devides but not Android):

https://www.algoriddim.com/hardware#ios
https://www.algoriddim.com/hardware#android

But I'm not sure about other apps. The DJuced app is bugged out and just crashes on startup, so no luck there.

Hello 6locc_6a6y,

djay Android current app only supports 9 DJ controllers described on https://www.algoriddim.com/hardware#android
and DJControl Inpulse 200 is not one of them, so you can assign Inpulse 200 audio channels, but you cannot assign Inpulse 200 MIDI channels.

I do not know any DJ app in Android open to MIDI mapping today. Djuced app is very old and as Hercules is now a partner of djay/algoriddim, so Djuced app future is not in Android in my opinion.

Today, I do not think there is any DJ app in Android you may use with DJControl Inpulse 200. Hercules controller for Android is DJControl Mix, it comes with djay app, but as you experienced, djay app for Android does not support other controllers than 1 Hercules (DJControl Mix), 5 Reloop (Buddy, BeatPad, Beatpad2, Mixon & Mixtour), and 3 Pioneer (DDJ-200, Wego 3 & 4).

Do you know if this is due to some technical limitation of MIDI on Android? I have a Akai MPK Mini keyboard that plugs into this Tablet using the same USB hub, which can successfully control a MIDI piano app FWIW.

Are there any plans for DJay to support this device? Or other steps I could try?

Hello 6locc,

Android has no specific limitations in MIDI.

The main limitations of Android for DJ apps are more related to:

1) multichannel audio: while Android includes USB multichannel audio playback, the USB audio layer included ins some Android smartphones/tablets may be limited to 1 stereo output

2) development cost: developping on Android is more costly than on iOS as Android hosts installed basis is more heterogeneous regarding android builds, display resolutions, processors or storage

3) return on investment on niche markets: most Android users buy no app, so Android app developpers revenues often come from advertising, while as iOS users buy apps, iOS app developpers revenues also come from Apple store sales.
The advertizing revenues on mass market apps as games remain big, but on niche market apps as DJ apps, the advertizing revenue potential is more limited, and there is no good moment to display advertizing in a DJ app, while it is easy to do it in a game between the game levels.
