Setup for DJing with time-code vinyl discs

Published in Tech Tips

DJing with time-code vinyl requires
- a DJ software capable of time-code DJing as VirtualDJ Pro, Cross, and 2 time-code vinyl discs supported by the DJ software
- 2 DJ turntables,
- an DJ controller whose audio interface has 2 stereo inputs supporting phono level if the DJ turntables have a phono output level, for example a Hercules DJ Console Rmx2, 4-Mx, Rmx, Mk4 or Mk2.

Then you have 2 possible installations:
- Either you use no analogue mixer: you then use the Hercules DJ Console mixer controls
- Or you use an analogue mixer: you then use the mixer instead of the central controls of Hercules DJ Console.

A) With no analogue mixer
- Connect the outputs of the turntables to Hercules DJConsole Rmx2 :
  - the turntable located on left on inputs 1-2
  - the turntable located on right on inputs 3-4
  - set the inputs on phono level if your turntables output is in phono level,
  - activates your inputs in your DJConsole Rmx2 control panel,
- Connect the headphones on DJConsole Rmx2 headphones output plug, on front panel or on top panel,
- Connect your speakers on DJ Console Rmx2 outputs 1-2 (dual XLR or dual RCA)
- Play your time-code vinyl discs on your 2 turntables
- Run your DJ software, and calibrate your inputs in time code vinyl mode
- your turntable on left side now controls the left virtual deck, your turntable on the right side now controls the right-side virtual deck.
The connections are as follows

B) With an analogue mixer
- Connect the outputs of the turntables to Hercules DJConsole Rmx2 :
  - the turntable located on left on inputs 1-2
  - the turntable located on right on inputs 3-4
  - set the inputs on phono level if your turntables output is in phono level,
  - activates your inputs in your DJConsole Rmx2 control panel,
- Connect the output 1-2 of your DJConsole Rmx2 to the input 1-2 of the analogue mixer,
- Connect the output 3-4 of your DJConsole Rmx2 to the input 3-4 on the analogue mixer,
- Connect the headphones on the mixer headphones output plug,
- Connect your speakers on the mixer master outputs
- Play your time-code vinyl discs on your 2 turntables
- Run your DJ software, and calibrate your inputs in time code vinyl mode
- your turntable on left side now controls the left virtual deck, your turntable on the right side now controls the right-side virtual deck.
The connections are as follows

Traktor LE 2.8.1 for DJConsole Rmx2 Premium TR

Published in DJConsole RMX2

Traktor team has released Traktor Pro 2.8.1 and Traktor LE 2.8.1.

The users of DJConsoleRmx2 Premium TR can download Traktor LE 2.8.1 from Native Instruments website.

Run Traktor LE  2.81

and benefit of 2 new features of Traktor LE 2.81.

64-Bit Application Architecture (in Mac OS / Windows 64-bit)
Definition
: Traktor LE has now a 64-bit architecture to access all the available RAM on computers with 64-bit operating systems, instead of accessing only to 2GB of RAM on the previous Traktor release.
Result:
The access to more RAM allows Traktor Pro to manage of more items (larger Track Collections, better playback caching, etc.).

Parallel Audio Analysis (in offline mode, on multi-core processors as i3, i5, i7)
Definition
: The “Parallel Processing” mode lets Traktor Pro use multiple threads to analyze several tracks simultaneously.
Access
: This option can be activated at the bottom of the Analysis window you get when right clicking on tracks and choosing “Analyze” from the context menu.

Target: Processing large collections of files is faster with this option enabled, but more CPU consuming, so it should not be done while performing but in an offline situation.

To download Traktor LE 2.8.1, you must be a registered owner of Traktor LE 2 (included with DJConsole Rmx2 Premium TR)
- Go to https://www.native-instruments.com/en/

Play a mix on a bluetooth speaker while previewing on wired headphones in Mac OS

Published in DJConsole RMX2

Wired headphones are generally recommended for DJing since wired headphones have no latency, while most bluetooth headphones have a latency which can disturb the DeeJay operations.

Bluetooth speakers can be used in DJing to play the music for the audience : bluetooth latency is not disturbing for the audience.

Here is a process on Mac OS to use
- a bluetooth speaker for the audience,
- and wired headphones for the DeeJay preview.

1) Connect the bluetooth speaker to the Mac
Go in Preference > Bluetooth and pair the Bluetooth speaker

2) If your audio interface control panel has a menu to set the headphones on the channel 1-2, set the headphones channel on 1-2.

3) Go in Utilities and run Audio MIDI Setup

4) In the Audio MIDI Setup, go to Window Audio devices, and create an aggregate device in clicking on the + button on bottom left

5) In the Aggregate device, add
- first, the Bluetooth speaker
- second, your audio interface device.

6) Click on Configure Speakers (bottom right of the window) and set:
- Aggregate Device as Multichannel: Quadriphonic
- Front: channel 1 and 2
- Rear : channel 3 and 4

7) In your DJ software, in the sound setup, set:
- Sound Card: Aggregate Device
- Outputs
   Master: Channel 1&2
   Headphones:  Channel 3&4

You can now
- play your mix on the bluetooth speaker for the audience
- preview your mix in your headphones.

Remark: you can
1) neither use the microphone connected to the audio interface, as the microphone input is not connected to the bluetooth speaker,
2) nor use the output 1-2 of your audio interface to play the mix on wired speakers: your master output is your bluetooth speaker, while the output 1-2 of your audio interface plays the preview.

Attaching DJConsole Rmx2 with the first Rmx rack mounting kit

Published in DJConsole RMX2

Steve Sharp has posted a video explaining how he uses the rack mounting kit made for the original Hercules DJ Console Rmx to fix in a rack Hercules DJConsole Rmx2.

Adapting Rmx rack ears to Rmx2 requires adding 8 components (4 bolts + 4 washers) not included in the original rack mounting kit
- 4 M4 bolts (they replace 4 M3 bolts of Rmx original rack mounting kit) with a length after the head not exceeding 8mm (so that the legth of bolt inside Rmx2 doesn't exceed 6mm)
- 4 M4 washers (instead of 4 M3 washers of Rmx original rack mounting kit).
