I guess the first step for me would be to get the hercules dj control steel, which I purcahsed not too long ago. Little did I know, the steel needs an audio interface to output to amp/speakers or what have you. But my real problem lies in how do I learn how to play the music I like, how to dj/mix using the control steel. Is there a tutorial out there? DO i just need to practice? Is this the best way to start out as a beginner? So many questions, so few answers. I thought this would be an inexpensive way to determine if this is somethin to persue or not. But I find it difficult to learn on my own how to Dj. I love music, and I want to share it with the world, but it's frustrating when you can't figour out how to do it. Any suggestions on where to start?

Hi Rookie,

1) You must import on your computer all your music, convert all your CDs in MP3 format.

2) you should read the manuals
- DJ Control Steel manual which explains the basic operations in DJing,
- VirtualDJ 5 DJC manual on http://ts.hercules.com/eng/index.php?pg=view_files&gid=2&fid=2 8&pid=215&cid=6
 (direct link ftp://ftp.hercules.com/sound/manuals/VDJ5/VDJ_5_DJC_Edition_Manual_1_0 _English.pdf).

3) you should either observe a DJ in operation and ask him/her to explain how (s)he prepares a party, or read a good book on DJing operations, as "DJing for dummies"
http://www.amazon.com/DJing-Dummies-John-Steventon/dp/0470032758

4) And you must practice, first alone, then with friends, and afterwards you can try to host public parties.

Answering to technical questions with
- more technical details than needed is NEVER a problem,
- less technical details than needed is ALWAYS a problem

I own the RMX so itz not that different but i originally started just using virtual dj software by itself and understanding that so the transition wasn't too hard however....but when using the console u want start out basic and then slowly transitioning to the major stuff that u can use it for...like when learning scratching techniques i watched some of the youtube vids that sum of these other guys posted...as well as talked to dj's that i have become familiar with...the thing i like is that you can technically control and manipulate the console like turntables making it possible to do breakbeats and make all diffrent scratch sounds and still b simple enough to keep the effects not manual..even tho i started learning to dj with turntables... what tha guys b4 me said and just watch, copy, and then make ur own style...tha control steel and rmx are worth owning and
